What to wear to an interview when the dress code is unclear
A calm interview formula that signals care without looking like a costume for the company website.

Aim one step above the daily uniform
Research how people in the role dress, then move one degree more considered rather than several degrees more formal. A tailored jacket over an open-collar shirt may be right for a creative office. A conservative suit remains safer for law, finance, and senior client work. The goal is respect for the meeting, not imitation of a different profession.

Remove anything that needs monitoring
An interview already demands attention. Avoid trousers that need pulling up, shoes that pinch, a collar that collapses, or a jacket that catches when you sit. Try the complete outfit at a desk and while walking. Clothes that stay in place let your posture and conversation remain natural.

Keep the visual message simple
Use two or three quiet colours and repeat one of them in the shoes or belt. Strong fragrance, novelty cufflinks, and an oversized watch create details the interviewer did not ask to evaluate. Clean shoes, a pressed shirt, and controlled proportions communicate more than an expensive label.
