Shoes
The most useful shoes are defined by your trousers
A guide to choosing versatile footwear by proportion, weather, and actual weekly use.
01
Start at the trouser hem
A shoe is versatile only if it works with the trousers you own. Slim cropped trousers usually need a lighter visual profile. Fuller trousers can support a rounder toe and stronger sole. Photograph the combinations from standing height; a shoe that looks elegant in isolation may disappear or look undersized beneath the wrong hem.
02
Match the sole to the ground
Your normal weather and walking distance matter more than abstract formality. A discreet rubber sole can be the best choice for commuting, wet pavements, and long days. Leather soles remain useful indoors and for formal occasions, but they should not be treated as the default proof of quality.
03
Buy overlap deliberately
Two nearly identical pairs are justified only when rotation extends their life or each handles a different condition. Otherwise, make the second pair solve another job. A dark derby and a suede loafer usually create more useful range than two shades of the same office shoe.
